Nokia Lumia 520 now available for just $29 on eBay

The Nokia Lumia 520, which is the most popular Windows Phone device out there, is now available for just $29 on eBay. This translates into a discount of around 70% given the device's original price of $99.99.
The online retailer is claiming that close to 8,500 units of the smartphone, which connects to AT&T's GoPhone pre-paid service, have been sold, and stock is limited.
Specifications-wise, the device is powered by Qualcomm MSM8227 chipset with a 1 GHz dual core processor and Adreno 305 GPU, and sports a 4 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, rendering 480 x 800 pixels resolution. It comes with 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory (which can be extended up to 64 GB via a microSD card), and runs Windows Phone 8.1.
In terms of camera, the Lumia 520 features only a 5MP rear shooter, and packs in a 1430 mAh battery

XDA-Devs find way to install Windows 10 on any Lumia

The Windows 10 Technical Preview was released this Thursday, but only for select phones. Now thanks to an XDA-Developers hack you can install it on just about any Lumia that you are not using.
That last bit is important since this can brick your device. People have reported success with various phones, including the Lumia 720, which has just 512MB RAM. The update is officially available for 512MB phones, though there's a possibility they won't get all features in the final build.
Anyway, the update has worked on a Lumia 930 and a Lumia 1320 bought from different carriers, though some are reporting issues on Lumia 920 and 520.
You can read the step-by-step guide for the update in this thread, plus reports on how others fared and some troubleshooting. The process is fairl involved and not for the faint of heart and once again it could brick your device.

Verizon's Nokia Lumia Icon is getting the Denim update

As promised by Verizon and Microsoft in December, the Lumia Denim update is now finally on its way to the Lumia Icon smartphone. Last year we heard that the rollout would occur in "early 2015", and February probably qualifies for that definition.
The Icon follows in the footsteps of Verizon's Lumia 822 and Lumia 928, both of which have been running the latest software since 2014.

Lumia Denim is the latest release based on Windows Phone 8.1, and it was announced in September of last year. A wider rollout for Denim commenced in January.
The update brings with it the new Lumia Camera app, "Hey Cortana" voice activation, live folders on the Start screen, an "Apps Corner" for specific apps or games, SMS merge and forwarding, customizable snooze times in the Alarm app, consumer VPN support, faster browsing in IE, and a live tile for the Windows Phone store.
If your Lumia Icon hasn't yet notified you that there's an update available, you can always manually check by going to Settings > Phone update. To be able to download it, you'll need to have at least 1GB of free storage space on your device.

Lumia 532 could soon go on sale in India

The Microsoft Lumia 532, which was unveiled last month, may go on sale in India soon, given that its stock has started arriving in the country, as revealed by import tracking website Zauba (see the below image).

According to NPU, which first broke the news, the entry-level device may get priced somewhere between INR 6,999 ($112) and INR 7,499 ($120), and could be released in 2-3 weeks.
As for the specifications, the device is powered by a version of the Snapdragon 200 chipset with a quad-core CPU ticking at 1.2GHz. It sports a 4-inch display of 800x480 pixel resolution, and comes with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory (expandable up to 128GB via a MicroSD card). A 30GB OneDrive cloud storage is also included.
The smartphone features a 5MP main camera, and a VGA front shooter. It packs a 1,560mAh battery in a an all-plastic body, weighing 136.3g.

10 most trending phones of the week

Major manufacturers are prepping for the MWC, finalizing the flagships that will shape the smartphone market for the rest of the year. As a result, the past week didn't witness major official launches but there was still plenty of movement in the charts.
The Top 10 trending phones chart is a list of the devices that gathered the most hits throughout the week. In other words, the chart represents the interests of the majority of people, and is an indication of what currently interests you.
Samsung claimed the top three again, but we have a new winner this week. The Galaxy A5 inched its way to first place, climbing from second position last week. Long-time favorite Galaxy Grand Prime surrendered the top spot but is still in the running. The Galaxy S5 retained its third position.
A fey new entries made it to the list this week. The yet-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy S6 accumulated the most hits among the newcomers, driven by the bucket load of leaks. The Galaxy A3 was likely ushered in by its bigger brother, and the Tizen-powered Z1 completed the Koreans' strong performance. An unexpected Lumia 535 also managed to sneak in the chart, ending up in tenth position.

Dual-SIM Microsoft Lumia 435 is now available in India

The Microsoft Lumia 435, which was unveiled in mid-January, has today become available to buy in India. We're talking about the dual-SIM version of the handset, which is currently being offered in white and black by Microsoft's online store for the subcontinent.
Green and orange color versions were also presented during the phone's official unveiling, but so far those have not been launched in India. Perhaps they will arrive in the future.

If you want to buy a Lumia 435 from Microsoft, you need to pay INR 5,999. At the current exchange rates, that means $96 or €85. That's pretty close to the €70 price before taxes that Microsoft touted last month. The software giant's Indian online store claims you'll receive your brand new Lumia 435 in 4 working days if you order one.
In this instance, the price is low because the hardware isn't anything to get excited about. The Lumia 435 sports a 4-inch 480x800 touchscreen, a 2 MP rear camera, and a VGA secondary shooter. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 chipset with a 1.2 GHz dual-core Cortex-A7 CPU, it has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable internal storage, 42Mbps HSPA support, and a 1,560 mAh battery. It runs Windows Phone 8.1.

Lumia RM-1099 with 4-inch display under testing in India

The Lumia RM-1099 successfully passed certification in Indonesia last month, but sadly there were neither specifications, nor photos of the device available at that time because unlike other certification processes, the Indonesian authorities don’t reveal any details regarding the product.
However, it is now being reported that the device is getting tested in India, and the good news is that a couple its specifications have been revealed. According to an entry on Indian import tracking website Zauba (the first entry in the image above), the Lumia RM-1099 is a low-end device having a 4-inch display and dual-SIM support.
Aside from the RM-1099, the RM-1110 and RM-1069 also recently passed certification in Indonesia.

Alleged QHD Lumia 2520 successor surfaces in GFXBench

The popular testing application GFXBench has long been a plentiful, albeit often confusing source of hardware leaks for new devices. This is precisely the case with a recently revealed tablet specs sheet. The information cited on the website seems to revel a rather powerful new piece of hardware with a 10.1-ich screen putting it squarely in tablet territory, and a QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution.

The rumor mill leads us to believe that this is a future successor to the Lumia 2520, but something in the specs sheet just doesn't add up. The GPU in the report is announced as Qualcomm Adreno 420, which is found in the Snapdragon 805 SoC. This is all fine, but the problem is the OS of the device is listed as Windows and this most probably refers to Windows 10.
Microsoft has really been pitching its new One Windows strategy lately and it comes as no surprise that a new line of powerful hardware is required to really allow the now OS version to take off once it hits consumer markets. One of the pressing questions that were recently answered about Windows 10 is how it will behave on smaller devices.

Microsoft Lumia 435 pre-order starts in the UK, ships 1st of march

Two weeks after its announcement, the Microsoft Lumia 435 is now available for pre-order in the UK. The phone is offered by Amazon and costs £88.49 SIM-free and is offered in Black, Orange and Green. Actual shipping date has also been confirmed - a month from now, March 1.

Microsoft plans to make the phone available throughout February in more countries in Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East. The Lumia 435 is a budget-minded handset with a Snapdragon 200 chipset with a dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 4" LCD display (480 x 800 pixels).
It's also destined to receive Windows 10 once the OS reaches its final status alongside the Lumia 730, Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520.
Additional specifications of the Lumia 435 include a weight of 131.9g and a 1,560mAh battery, good for almost 12 hours of talk time or 21 hours if you're on 2G. The phone boasts 42.2Mbps downlink speeds over 3G, which is about as good as it gets pre-LTE.

EE's Nokia lumia 930 will get denim update soon

The Lumia Denim update started rolling out last year, but it reached the Nokia Lumia 930 flagship only recently.
Some 930's get it sooner than others, among the unlucky users were those on EE in the UK. The update has been arriving on 930's in other regions for two weeks now, but those on UK's largest carrier are only now joining the fun.
Lumia Denim incorporates WP8.1 Update 1 and adds exclusive goodies like 4K video recording (at 24fps), Rich Capture and improvements to the image processing algorithm.
By the way, the Lumia 930 will be one of the phones to get Windows 10 eventually.
If you have a Nokia Lumia 930 from EE you can check for updates on your phone. If you're using the Developer Preview you may need to leave it in order to update.

Microsoft giving away a free Lumia 435 for every Lumia 535 buyer in Italy this Valentine’s Day

Slowly, but surely, we’re starting to hear more and more about this year’s Valentine’s Day offers and deals. The latest such promotion to get unearthed comes from Italy, where Microsoft is preparing a pretty sweet deal.
If you buy a Lumia 535 from February 4 to February 15, you’ll get a free Lumia 435. This is however limited to Italy, so if you’re not there, you can’t take advantage of the offer.
You don’t even have to buy the Lumia 535 from a specific store. Any purchase counts, whether made online or offline, even if you get the device from an Italian carrier. After you’ve bought the Lumia 535, you simply go to the special website Microsoft has set up for this promo, enter your details so your purchase can be identified, and that’s it. You then patiently wait and Microsoft will start shipping the free Lumia 435 units on February 23. You will have to register on the website between February 4 and February 22.
A “buy one, get one free” offer always sounds neat, and this one might help Microsoft move some product over in Italy. Neither the Lumia 535 nor the Lumia 435 are high-end devices, but getting two smartphones for the price of one is still pretty good.

AdDuplex report : Lumia 630 and 530 are on the rise

AdDuplex is back with another monthly report on the state of Windows Phone. This month new devices are gaining on their aging predecessors, with the Lumia 63x and Lumia 530 threatening to overtake the ubiquitous Lumia 520 as the top phone in the foreseeable future.
The Lumia 530, formerly the base Lumia model, made great strides and went from 10th place to 5th. The Lumia 635 is just behind it in 6th, moving up from 9th place. Interestingly, the Lumia 925 and 920 made some small progress, they are one and two generations behind, respectively.
In terms of manufacturers things haven’t changed – Microsoft/Nokia have over 95% of the market, with HTC as the only other maker with more than a percent. Both Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 are going up at the expense of WP7, eventually some the WP8.x phones will move to Windows 10.

In Colombia the Nokia Lumia 520 still accounts for over half the market, while in Brazil it makes up a third of phones. In Europe the Lumia 63x is making better progress, the Lumia 635 is the top device in Germany while the Lumia 630 is close to overtaking the 620 in Italy and Russia.
Last month we saw Microsoft's first device, the Lumia 535, break into the Top 10 in India and it has been growing fast – it's already in second place with 9.1% (up 5 percentage points). It's still far behind the 26.8% of the Lumia 520, though that's still a very positive reception for the new device.
The Microsoft Lumia 425 and Lumia 532 are still not on the map.

Microsoft lists Lumia 835 on its website, it's probably a typo

Nokia Lumia 835 popped up today on the Microsoft's official Lumia webpage. It's AT&T exclusive, has similar specs to Lumia 830 and of you click on the link - it takes you to AT&T's Lumia 830 store page.
The Lumia 835 looks a lot like a typo - if it was a new upcoming Lumia it wouldn't be Nokia branded, it looks like the Lumia 830, comes with similar hardware and even the link suggests for Lumia 830. Oh, and there is another typo in the description text - O1S instead of OIS.

Of course, there is always a chance someone messed up and spilled the beans on an upcoming Lumia 835 while creating its placeholder or dedicated locked page.
If someone is indeed readying a Lumia 835 for upload on the website, we guess the announcement should happen soon. We wouldn't get our hopes too high, though.

A lower-priced alternative for Lumia 830 in production

Microsoft is continuously expanding its smartphone portfolio, and after the low-end Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 of late, the midrange is due for a refreshment. The future smartphone with an model designation RM-1072 will be a cheaper alternative to the current Lumia 830.
Nokia Lumia 830
The hardware of the new device will be very similar to that of the Lumia 830. Display size and resolution are identical at 5 inches and 1280x720 pixels. The familiar but somewhat dated Snapdragon 400 chipset will provide processing power. RAM, while unspecified, is likely going to be 1GB as recent devices even in the budget segment came with that amount. Built-in storage will be 8GB with the option for microSD expansion.
The camera department marks a notable difference. The main imager on the back will be an 8.7MP unit, putting the new device smack in the middle between the Lumia 735 and Lumia 830. A basic 720p snapper will be on the front, adequate for Skype video calls.
The RM-1072 has passed certification in Indonesia on January 5 and its official unveiling appears imminent. A dual SIM version will also be available. The new device is expected to carry a $275 price tag upon launch.

MINIX NEO Z64 Mini PC , available for Android and Windows phones

MINIX, a reputable media center hardware manufacturer, has announced the latest addition to its device lineup. It comes in the form of the Minix Neo Z64 Mini PC. The name is more than fitting, as the device is truly small and will fit nicely in front of any TV and also packs quite a punch offering PC-grade performance.
It is powered by an Intel Z3735F 64-bit processor with 2MB of cache and a Turbo clock of 1.83GHz. Tech-savy readers are sure to recognize the chip, as it is the same silicon that powers most of today’s Windows-based tablets. That being said, the device will more than readily run Android as well, making it as universal as it gets in terms of media PCs.
Also under the hood of the Minix NEO Z64, there’s 2GB DDR3L memory and 32GB of eMMC storage. This should be plenty for most multimedia purposes, but MINIX has also thrown in an SD card slot and two USB 2.0 for further extendability. Going around the small computer we also see a HDMI 1.4 for video output, 10/100 Mbits LAN, a headphone jack and a power DC IN on the rear. It supports Full HD output and playback and is also equipped with a 802.11n wireless card, hence the protruding antenna and Bluetooth 4.0.
Geekbuying currently sells the MINIX NEO Z64 in two variants one with Android 4.4.4 preinstalled, while the other with Windows 8.1 for $144.90 and $174.90, respectively. Bear in mind that the latter does include an OEM license for Windows, which is exceptional at that price tag and both even include a remote control.
The MINIX NEO Z64 is a solid choice and will definitely handle most multimedia tasks you throw at it. While the hardware is nothing spectacular, the level of freedom in OS choice is impressive and the built-in Intel HD graphics chip is more than enough to power Android gaming and possibly even some casual PC titles. Whether it be next to a TV or as a bare-bone work PC solution the MINIX NEO Z64 is definitely worth checking out.

More countries to be greeted by the Denim update for Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930 devices

Microsoft has unleashed another wave of Denim updates and this time its for the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930 in a plethora of countries. The update for the Lumia 1520 is unleashed in the UK for Vodafone, Germany, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania etc and check now and you can see Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland

As for the Lumia 930, the Denim update is now available for residents in Australia and parts of the UK. Last week, Microsoft made the phone's firmware update available in the Middle East, parts of Asia and Latin America.
Many WP8.1 Lumia devices have already received the Lumia Denim update in Europe and India, China while the Lumia 822, Lumia 928 and Lumia Icon (internationally known as 930) have gotten the update on Verizon in the US.
For more information on how Microsoft is moving with the updates, you can check out the Asia Pacific and Europe trackers.

Lumia 435, 735 and 930 to get Windows 10 update

Microsoft is determined to boost the adoption just-unveiled Windows 10 OS as much as possible. In addition to offering a free copy of Windows 10 for the first year of availability to anyone with a Windows 8.1, Windows 8 and Windows 7 license, the company is set to bring the OS to as many current mobile devices as possible.

In a blog post by Microsoft's own Chris Weber the low-end Lumia 435 is quoted specifically to receive the OS update. The article also confirms that the midrange Lumia 735 and the top-tier Lumia 930 will join the Lumia 1520, which we all witnessed at the press conference to be the pioneer Windows 10 smartphone.
The stated model numbers are more of a representation of Microsoft's plans for Windows 10 to span the majority of the lineup, rather than an exclusive list of devices that will get it. Meaning that your precious Lumia 830 is very likely to be on that list, for example.
And also implicating that older phones may be left out. It's unclear which devices might be out of luck, but we are hoping Microsoft will shed more information about it soon.
