Microsoft jumps the gun on the Lumia 640 and 640 XL news post

The Lumia 640 has been popping up in various rumors throughout the past month or so. The Windows Phone handset was rumored to make an appearance at MWC 2015 and even though you never know untill it official, the upcoming unveiling of the smartphone is beyond any doubt now.
The company's official news center jumped the gun earlier today and released an article for the device, confirming its existence. This is a substantial lip up on Microsoft's part, but what makes it particularly juicy is that the article also refers to another, previously unknown phone, dubbed the Lumia 640 XL.

According to a previous leak the Lumia 640 is allegedly a dual SIM smartphone that sports integrated digital television (DTV) and supports 3G and Bluetooth 4.0. Judging from the XL moniker, we can only assume that the other device will be a larger version of the handset, just like the Nokia XL was to the Nokia X.
The article itself was naturally quickly taken down, but thanks to Google's helpful web crawlers a cached version is still available, sowing the article's title and original URL. The leak does not really disclose any info about the two devices, but it does proclaim their existence and definitely elevates expectations for Microsoft's Barcelona event, set for tomorrow, March 2, at 08:00 GTM+1.

Microsoft working on People Sense app friend tracking capability for Windows Phone

Microsoft is working on a new friend tracking feature in an upcoming app – People Sense for the Windows Phone devices and is internally referred as Buddy Aware.
With this app, Windows Phone owners will be able to share their location in real time with their friends and family. The location sharing will also offer step-by-step navigation to the contacts. Quick shortcut for instant messaging, voice calls, and support integration with other third party apps will be anchored inside it. In a way, calling and messaging would be possible right inside, without having to switch between apps.
People Sense app is quite similar to Find My Friends app for iPhone and many others on the Android platform. In fact, Google had a similar implementation named as Google Latitude which was discontinued in August 2013

most trending phones of the week

The Samsung domination in  weekly chart is breaking records and this week the Korean company's phones have managed to throw out arch-rival iPhone 6 completely. Apparently no force is strong enough to bring the Lumia 535 down and the Microsoft budget model remains in the chart.

The Top 10 trending phones chart is a recap list of the devices that gathered the most hits throughout the week. In other words, the chart represents the interests of the majority of your interests, and is an indication of what currently interests you.
There is little action at the top with the Samsung Galaxy A5 still holding the crown. Galaxy S6 is the runner up, and is a favorite to claim the title as early as next week, when it goes official. Strong support comes from the Galaxy Grand Prime and the Z1 down the ranks.
The Galaxy S4 reentered the chart after it got Lollipop and is the only fresh face this week. The Asus Zenfone 5 is slowly being pushed down the chart, while the Lumia 535 remains in tenth position for a third week in a row.

Microsoft has Lumia 635 with 1GB of RAM on the way

It looks like Microsoft is about to give Nokia Lumia 635 a random access memory bump. An unannounced version of the popular entry-level smartphone with 1GB of RAM appeared in a Telenor product listing in Hungary.
A list of ROMs on Microsoft’s own servers also confirm the existence of the new model. It reveals that the upcoming device will be available on a number of wireless carriers. The latter include Telekom, Movistar, TIM, and Wind among others.
Overall, it appears that Microsoft is about to quit offering entry-level smartphones with 512MB of RAM. The Redmond giant’s latest Lumia 435 and Lumia 535 also pack 1GB of RAM.
Microsoft has a scheduled MWC event on March 2. The updated Lumia 635 is likely to be announced then.

Microsoft Lumia 640 specs and price tag make the rounds

Purported specifications of the unannounced Microsoft Lumia 640 made the rounds online. Earlier today, the dual-SIM DTV variant of smartphone got caught in official regulatory paperwork in Brazil.
The Lumia 640 is tipped to pack Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 with quad-core CPU, 5” 720p display, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of expandable storage. An 8.7MP main camera with 0.9MP front-facing snapper are also rumored. The former could be the same unit as the one fond in Nokia Lumia 920.
Full connectivity suite is also going to be present in the Lumia 640, headed by LTE and NFC. Wireless charging support via a dedicated back cover is also rumored.
Microsoft Lumia 640 could be priced around $275 when it launches. The mid-ranger is all but certain to debut during MWC in Barcelona.

Documents connect RM-1109 to the unannounced Lumia 640

Less than a couple of weeks before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 in Barcelona officially kicks off, information regarding a new Microsoft Lumia smartphone (model number: RM-1109) has surfaced.
According to Brazilian website JanelaTech, which cited documents from the country's regulatory agency Anatel, the device will be the Lumia 640 Dual SIM DTV. It is allegedly a dual SIM smartphone that sports integrated digital television (DTV) and supports 3G and Bluetooth 4.0. In addition, it was also revealed that the handset will be marketed with the following accessories: AC-20B charger, battery Lithium-T5C BV, and WH108 headset.
The Lumia 640 could be announced at the upcoming MWC given that Microsoft has only requested confidentiality for the device until March 13.

Microsoft Indonesia is teasing Lumia 1330 on Facebook

The Nokia Lumia 1330 is not exactly official, but Microsoft Indonesia is already teasing the mid-range Windows Phone phablet. It's advertising the dual-SIM connectivity, which will come in LTE and 3G versions. LTE-enabled dual-SIMs are rare, this will be the first Lumia to do it.
Other versions include three single-SIM options – one with LTE-Advanced, one with regular LTE and one with just 3G. They will have a 5.7" 720p screen according to leaked benchmarks, though those are not very accurate so the Lumia 1330 can still have a 6" screen like its predecessor.
It will have a much better camera though, the current expectations are for a 14MP shooter with Zeiss optics and 1080p video, plus a 5MP seflie camera. So far, so good though the chipset is rumored to be a Snapdragon 400 with 1GB of RAM, which doesn’t sound terribly exciting.
Anyway, the teaser just says "Coming soon" and with a Microsoft event scheduled for the MWC (on March 2) we just might see an official unveiling in a couple of weeks. Or the event could be just about Windows 10.

Most trending phones of the week

Mobile World Congress is approaching and it's becoming increasingly more obvious which smartphone is on top of the hotly anticipated list. There's no stopping the Samsung Galaxy S6 on its quest up the charts, and it's only the Galaxy A5 that's managed to put up a fight.

The Top 10 trending phones chart is a recap list of the devices that gathered the most hits on the web throughout the week. In other words, the chart represents the interests of the majority of people, and is an indication of what currently interests you.
The  Galaxy A5 is keeping it on top, but the future flagship is nearing, driven by pretty renders. Galaxy Grand Prime is losing ground and after it surrendered the top position last week, we find it in third sport this time around.
The chart is otherwise overflowing with Samsung devices, the Koreans occupying a dominant 7 spots. The Asus Zenfone 5 somehow manages to hold its own against the Samsung crowd, but is losing position nonetheless. The iPhone 6 keeps Apple in the running, and the Lumia 535 retains its tenth position so Windows Phone is still represented.

New Cortana ads by Microsoft focus on Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day almost upon us, Microsoft decided to release a couple of new promotional videos for Cortana, its very own virtual personal assistant. As you’d expect given the Valentine’s Day theme, the ads are all about love. The Lumia 635 smartphone is featured in them too, though oddly with a Microsoft logo replacing Nokia’s.
In the first video, one man is happy that despite having broken up with his girlfriend around Valentine’s, which isn’t fun, he’s quickly managed to find someone new. Not only that, but he’s apparently blown away by how well she knows him.
So that’s one lucky guy, right? Well, it turns out he’s not alone. The other video is about a woman telling her parents that she finally met someone who brings out the best in her.
Around this time of the year every company seems to think it’s obliged to release some kind of promotional material with a Valentine’s Day focus. And while Microsoft hasn’t bucked the trend, it managed to bring some neat humor along for its ride.

Microsoft confirms Windows 10 for phones will support both the new Start background and the old Tiles wallpaper

Microsoft introduced a new type of desktop background in Windows 10 for phones – the wallpaper now spreads over the background space, while the tiles become transparent so you can enjoy the picture behind them.
While this new options was welcomed by lots of people, some of the users still preferred the Windows Phone 8.1 way where the image you’ve selected was displayed on the tiles instead of behind. It was quite a cool and unique feature.
Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones kicked off yesterday and the promised full blown background is indeed available. When asked on the previous version of this features, Joe Belfiore responded over Twitter that Microsoft will be offering both options in the upcoming Windows 10 releases. This means you will be able to choose between no background, “full background” and “in tiles wallpaper”.
It’s nice to see Microsoft listening to the user requests and building the next Windows with all the insiders’ feedback in mind. We’ve already installed the Technical Preview and we’ll keep you in the loop as new features are added in.

Windows 10 Technical Preview now available for phones

As leaked last week, the very first release of Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is now out. You can download and install it on one of just six smartphones that are currently supported.

Microsoft promises more handsets will be added to subsequent Preview builds in the future, but for now you can only proceed if you own a Lumia 630Lumia 635Lumia 636, Lumia 638Lumia 730, or Lumia 830.
The software giant also notes that this is a "very early" preview, which means many things may break or not work right from the start. Bugs are to be expected, and there's a very long list of known issues at the Source link.
The user experience isn't polished yet, and you will see rough edges here and there. Microsoft says it's sharing it now for you to be able to give it feedback and help shape the final Windows 10 release for phones.

As described in the presentation video above, the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones comes with a small subset of the features that will be in the final build. The full-size background image for the Start screen is in, as are more quick actions in the Action Center, and interactive notifications.
The speech-to-text ability of the OS has been improved significantly, and the more powerful Photos app will aggregate your local photos with those you have stored on OneDrive.
For now, Cortana will be limited to the US and will only work with English, which is a step back from its functionality in the latest version of Windows Phone 8.1. That said, Microsoft promises that by the time Windows 10 is finished, its virtual assistant will be more capable than it ever was.
Coming in future builds will be the Office universal apps, as well as the new Mail and Calendar apps and Skype integrated directly into Messaging.
If you own one of the aforementioned supported devices and wish to take Windows 10 for phones for a spin, you need to first join the Windows Insider Program. Then you install the Windows Insider app, start it up, register your device, then check for updates. As work on Windows 10 for phones progresses, you'll get all the new builds, including the final one when that's out.

Microsoft Lumia 1330/1335 certified by FCC, dummies arrive in India

he successor to the midrange Lumia 1320 phablet is closely approaching. Apparently Microsoft is preparing its launch in India, as evidenced by dummy import documents. What is likely going to be called Lumia 1330/1335 will hit the market in no less than three color schemes.

Orange will be the lead color, outnumbering the rest 7 to 1. Less striking options are white and cyan, and the latter we've already seen, if only only as a back cover.
Globally speaking, the upcoming midranger will exist in multiple variants, and three are known so far. Intel on two of those comes from FCC database, showing the regulator has green-lighted the RM-1065 and RM-1064 models.
The former is the more exciting one, as it will pack dual SIM capability and support LTE. The RM-1064 will be largely the same device, only ditching the second SIM card. The RM-1062, that will arrive in India, as evidenced by the 8,000 units, will lose the 4G connectivity.
We previously reported on the alleged specs of the Lumia 1330/1335 range. A Snapdragon 400 chipset will be paired with a single gig of RAM, but a generous 32GB of built-in storage will be available.
We are yet to see if that will result in the loss of the microSD slot or there will be some sort of second SIM or microSD dilemma. The screen size will be reduced to 5.7 inches, compared to the predecessor's 6 inches, leaving the inevitable Lumia 1520 heir undisturbed at the top.
The import document naturally reveals no price or availability details.

New Microsoft sweepstakes lets you win a pair of Lumia 830 smartphones

Microsoft is celebrating the Valentine’s month by running a new sweepstakes, dubbed 28 Days of #LumiaLove, that will see three lucky winners walk away with a pair of Lumia 830 smartphones each. Along with the lumia you could also win a brand new Surface Pro 3, speakers, and $100 to spend on pizza!
To participate, all you have to do is to head to the official Lumia US Facebook page, fill in your details, and tell the company why do you want to have a Lumia device (in case you don’t have one), or what you love the most about your device (in case you’re already a Lumia owner).
The sweepstakes concludes at 11:59 p.m. on March 1, and is open only to US residents who are 16 years of age or older. For more details, click the Source link below.

Microsoft gives you 100GB of OneDrive space free for two years if you do one simple thing

If you’d like more online storage, but don’t want to pay for it, this will surely suit you well. Microsoft is currently offering 100GB of OneDrive storage space for free for two years. All you need to do is sign up for Bing Rewards – which is also free. The one catch? This is US-only.
Here’s how it works. If you have Microsoft account, you log in and then head to the Bing Rewards Dashboard. If you haven’t signed up for Bing Rewards before, you’ll see a “Join Now” link. Click that, then choose “Try it now for free”. After you see the “Welcome to Bing Rewards” page, go to “Earn and explore”, then click on “Free storage”, and finally choose “Get my storage”. That’s it.
For two years from this point on, you’ll be able to use 100GB of OneDrive space for free. The offer ends on February 28, so if you don’t have anything against using Microsoft’s cloud storage solution, you should probably perform the procedure explained above and bag that free space – provided you’re in the US, that is. Hopefully deals like this will be available to the rest of the world too at some point.
