Apple is now seeding iOS 8.3 beta 2 to developers

Today Apple has made the iOS 8.3 beta 2 available for developers. So they can now test it, tinker with it, and report the bugs they find back to the Apple mothership.
The newest version of iOS brings with it a more diverse collection of emojis and flags. As a release note, Apple mentions that "the dialog that appears when connecting an iPhone to a CarPlay-compatible car is not functional". Also, Verizon's Voice-over-LTE service isn't supported in iOS 8.3 beta 2.

The first beta of iOS 8.3 went out earlier this month, and it had more new features compared to the second one - wireless CarPlay support, improved Google login, an updated voice for Siri, Apple Pay support in China, and a new emoji picker. This followed the release of iOS 8.2 beta 5 at the beginning of February.
The final build of iOS 8.2 is due to be rolled out next month to all compatible devices, with no additional betas to be outed in the meantime. On the other hand, iOS 8.3 may get a public beta period starting in mid-March. The public beta might come at the same time as the third developer beta.
A second beta of Mac OS X 10.10.3 is also out today, complete with a new Photos app, and there's a new beta OS available for the Apple TV too.

This iPad Air 2 ad has been captured with the tablet itself

Apple launched yet another iPad commercial. Once again, the ad focuses on the Cupertino giant’s latest tablet, the iPad Air 2.
The minute-long clip is a nod to today’s Academy Awards ceremony. Shot entirely on an iPad Air 2 and narrated by the legendary movie director Martin Scorsese, the ad shows high school students while working on a film project.

A couple of weeks ago, Apple launched a music themed iPad ad, which was also shot with the slate. It coincided with the Grammy Awards.

Apple to out public betas for iOS 8.3 and iOS 9

Apple is apparently planning on releasing public beta versions for both iOS 8.3 and iOS 9 this year, according to a rumor on the matter. This information reportedly comes from "multiple people briefed on the plans", which means it should be reasonably accurate.
If true, this would be a big shift in Apple's way of developing its mobile software. Up until now, only registered developers have had access to the company's beta releases for iOS. And as being an iOS developer entails a $99 yearly fee, the public at large mostly hasn't ever seen any beta builds of iOS. There have been instances of people selling beta downloads from developer accounts, but their success has likely been limited.

This change probably comes as a reaction to the pretty bad rap iOS 8 got in terms of stability and bugs. It's safe to say this wasn't Apple's smoothest release ever, and the company seems to think that getting more people involved in beta testing future versions should make those less prone to having various issues - which makes sense of course.
Allegedly only 100,000 people will be allowed into the upcoming beta testing program, in order for this to maintain a level of exclusivity. So get ready for this to become yet another thing people brag about (if they get in). Apple's used the limited number of testers scheme before, when it released a public beta of Mac OS X for the first time last year, though in that case 1 million people were able to join.
The Mac betas will continue later this year. On the iOS side, we should see the 8.3 public beta be out sometime in mid-March. This will match the third beta for developers, which will be available the same week.
Further down the road, iOS 9 will be officially introduced at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in June. This will get a public beta release later in the summer, with the final launch scheduled for the fall. We've heard before that iOS 9 will be focused primarily on bug fixes and stability improvements.
iOS 8.3, on the other hand, will bring support for Wireless CarPlay, as well as a new Emoji keyboard, an enhanced voice for Siri, and simpler login procedures for Google services. The people who will become beta testers for these releases will be able to use a special app to report bugs to Apple.

Apple planning to begin car production by 2020, says Bloomberg

Nearly a week after there were reports that Apple is secretly working on an electric vehicle, Bloomberg is reporting that the Cupertino-based company is planning to begin production of the vehicle by the year 2020. That’s an aggressive timeframe given that experienced automobile companies typically spend 5-7 years developing a car.
As per the report, Apple’s car team consists of 200+ people, which is inline with an earlier report that said hundreds of employees are working on the project. In the past couple of months, the iPhone maker has been hiring experts in technologies for batteries and robotics – recently, electric-car battery maker A123 Systems sued Apple for poaching its top engineers.
A 2020 deadline would put Apple in direct competition with Google, as well as other automakers, like Nissan, Tesla, and GM, who are also planning to launch their self-driving or next-gen electric cars in the next five years.

Samsung slips to number five in Chinese smartphone market

Samsung, which was dethroned in China by local upstart Xiaomi last year, has slipped to the fifth position in the country's smartphone market now, according to a latest report from the market research firm IDC.
As per the report, in Q4, 2014, the South Korean company captured just 7.9% of the market, a whopping 50% decline compared to the year ago quarter.
On the other hand, with an year-on-year growth of 150%, Xiaomi occupied the first place, capturing 13.7% of the market. Next came in Apple, with 12.3% market share, followed by Huawei and Lenovo, with 11% and 9.5% market share, respectively.
Overall, a total of 107.5 million smartphones were shipped in the country in Q4 last year, representing a 2% quarter-on-quarter growth.

Most trending phones of the week

Mobile World Congress is approaching and it's becoming increasingly more obvious which smartphone is on top of the hotly anticipated list. There's no stopping the Samsung Galaxy S6 on its quest up the charts, and it's only the Galaxy A5 that's managed to put up a fight.

The Top 10 trending phones chart is a recap list of the devices that gathered the most hits on the web throughout the week. In other words, the chart represents the interests of the majority of people, and is an indication of what currently interests you.
The  Galaxy A5 is keeping it on top, but the future flagship is nearing, driven by pretty renders. Galaxy Grand Prime is losing ground and after it surrendered the top position last week, we find it in third sport this time around.
The chart is otherwise overflowing with Samsung devices, the Koreans occupying a dominant 7 spots. The Asus Zenfone 5 somehow manages to hold its own against the Samsung crowd, but is losing position nonetheless. The iPhone 6 keeps Apple in the running, and the Lumia 535 retains its tenth position so Windows Phone is still represented.

Another alleged Apple iPad Pro case leaks out

A couple of weeks after the first sighting took place, images of another alleged protective case for the unannounced Apple iPad Pro made the rounds online. This time around, the photos of the upcoming accessory show it alongside a cover for iPad Air 2.
The case from the latest photos appears to fall in line with the one we saw last month. However, due to its slightly different construction, it does not contain cutouts for the rumored quartet of speakers in the iPad Pro. Instead, the cover leaves the top and the bottom of the tablet fully exposed.
The size comparison between the new case and the one for iPad Air 2 shows us the considerable size difference that will exist between the products. Apple iPad Pro is expected to feature a display with a diagonal between 12.2” and 12.9.”
Apple iPad Pro is expected to launch at some point in Q2 or Q3 this year. The full-size slate is all but certain to launch with an optional stylus.

HTC One (M9) renders size it up against the Galaxy S6, iPhone 6

HTC One (M9) is yet to be officially presented to the world, so all we have to look at are hurried photos and leaked images promoting phone cases. Luckily, Martin Hajek is a wiz at making 3D models and he used all info available on the One (M9) to create a virtual phone and put it up against the Apple iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S6.
The Galaxy S6 is also waiting for its official introduction, of course, but a few days ago Hajek modelled that one too.
Anyway, here’s a look at the HTC One (M9) by itself, it’s shaping up to be a beaut. Next up, three flagships stand side by side – the iPhone 6 is the shortest with its sub-5″ screen, while the Galaxy S6 is in between. Both the One (M9) and Galaxy S6 are expected to have 5″ screens. After that is a look at their backs and all the metal that the phones are encased in.

Here are a few simulated lifestyle images showing the One (M9) and its all-metal rival, the iPhone 6.

The renders match the spy shots we’ve seen so far, including the lack of a Duo Camera on the back. The centrally-placed selfie camera (4MP UltraPixel allegedly) come from “official” (not really) promo imagesfor the One (M9).

Apple secretly working on an electric vehicle that looks like a minivan, says WSJ

Hundreds of Apple employees are secretly working on an electric vehicle that apparently looks like a minivan in its current form, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Dubbed Titan, the year-old project is being headed by former Ford engineer Steve Zadesky who also helped the company create the iPod and iPhone.
The project would take several years to complete, and that’s assuming Apple decides to go through with it, something which isn’t certain as the company often develops prototypes for testing other products and technologies.
However, given the size of the project team, the level of people involved, as well as reports that Apple executives went to Austria to meet contract manufacturers that develop high-end cars, it looks like the company is serious, the report notes.
“There are products that we’re working on that no one knows about,” CEO Tim Cook had said last year. “That haven’t been rumored about yet.”

Apple doubled the size limit for iOS applications

Apple officially doubled the size limit for iOS applications. Going forward, App Store package submissions can carry a maximum size of 4GB.
The new iOS app size limit marks a serous jump from the previously allowed 2GB. Apple’s cellular network app delivery size has remained unchanged at 100MB.
A 4GB app size limit is surely going to benefit high-profile video game titles for iOS. Larger space allowed will result in more media and better graphics.
The classic game BioShock for iOS is a great game example that can take advantage of the larger binaries. The current version of the game arrived on Apple’s mobile platform with scaled-down graphics in order to squeeze into the previous 2GB app size limit.

Apple Watch will remind you to get up and take a walk every hour

The Apple Watch, which is launching in April this year, will remind you to get out of your desk chair and and move around if you haven’t done so for too long, according to CEO Tim Cook.
Speaking at the Goldman Sachs technology conference yesterday, Cook said that the smartwatch will “tap” you on the wrist 10 minutes before each hour, prompting you to get up and take a walk. He also shared that because so many people at the Cupertino-based company are wearing the watch, it’s common to see a lot of people getting up at the same time during meetings.
“It took a while to get used to, but it’s actually really good,” he said, adding that “a lot of doctors believe sitting is the new cancer.” Cook had earlier said that a large number of developers are already creating apps for the Apple Watch, and he has very high expectations from the wearable device. “I’m using it every day and love it and can’t live without it,” he had said.

Apple will power its futuristic new campus with an $850 million solar farm

An $850 million solar farm will power Apple’s futuristic new campus. The Cupertino giant’s CEO, Tim Cook, announced the huge investment in a speech during the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet conference.
The 1,300-acre facility will be located in Monterey, California. Apple will partner with the company First Solar on the project. The same company will help Apple build its solar-powered date center in Arizona.
Apple’s solar farm will deliver 130 megawatts of solar power – enough to light up 50,000 average households. The project will fulfill the energy needs of all of the tech giant’s offices and retail stores in California.
Tim Cook’s announcement has been well-received by environmental organizations. In an official statement, Greenpeace said that “other Fortune 500 CEOs would be well served to make a study of Tim Cook, whose actions show that he intends to take Apple full-speed ahead toward renewable energy with the urgency that our climate crisis demands.”

iOS 8.3 beta is seeding to registered developers

Apple began seeding iOS 8.3 beta to registered developers. The Cupertino giant launched the new build barely a week after it released iOS 8.2 beta 5, thus indicating that it is hard at work on improving its mobile OS.
The latest iOS build brings a number of new features to the platform headed by wireless CarPlay support. The functionality was previously available only via USB cable.
Google login has been improved as well. A brand new emoji picker is also on board.
Finally, iOS 8.3 code suggests that Apple Pay is headed to China via Union Pay. Access to the vast Chinese market is certain to give Apple’s payment system a massive boost.
It will surely be a while before iOS 8.3 makes its way to end users. Apple is yet to begin seeding iOS 8.2 to its mobile hardware.
The latest iOS beta arrives amid rumors about the next major release of Cupertino’s mobile platform. Apple iOS 9 is tipped to focus on improved optimization and stability.

Apple iOS 9 will focus on bug fixes and stability improvements

According to a new report online, Apple’s upcoming iOS 9 will not bring the usual host of new features as its predecessors. Codenamed Monarch, Cupertino’s next major iOS release will focus on bug fixes and overall stability improvements.
Some new features will of course make their way into iOS 9. However, optimizing the OS is going to be the major focus of Apple’s team of engineers - hardly a surprise considering the bevy of issues iOS 8 initially carried.
Apple is also said to be working on making iOS require less free storage for new updates. This particular issue stormed into the spotlight with iOS 8, which forced many users to delete content from their devices in order to install it. Owners of 16GB Apple iOS devices were unsurprisingly affected the most.
Such a step by Apple should hardly catch anyone by surprise. The company has made similar moves in the past with its OS X desktop and notebook platform.

Canaccord report says Apple accounted for 93% of smartphone profits in Q4

Apple captured 93% of smartphone profits during Q4 last year, according to leading financial services company Canaccord Genuity, which has raised its price target on the Cupertino-based company to $145 from $135.

Analyst Mike Walkley said that market data suggests continued strength for the iPhone 6 upgrade cycle, and predicted that by the end of the year 2018, the iPhone maker may have a third of all smartphone users.
As you can see in the chart shown above, Apple and Samsung are the only two companies to register significant profits in the industry during Q4 last year. For the whole of 2014, Apple captured 79% of profits.

The latest Apple iPad shows off its music making traits

Apple released a brand new iPad commercial. The Cupertino giant’s latest ad focuses on the tablet’s music making credentials.
The Swedish recording artist Elliphant is starring in the minute-long clip alongside iPad Air 2.Unsurprisingly, the video focuses on the artist’s use of the tablet during the process of creating a new tune. Check it out below.

In case you love the song from the clip, its name is “All or Nothing” by Elliphant (Riton iPad Remix feat. The Gaslamp Killer). Of course, you can find it in iTunes.

72% of Apple devices running iOS8 already

This month's numbers for iOS distribution are in and the current iOS8 claims 72%, Apple reports. The information is based on App Store access statistics and is current as of February 2.
iOS8 is up a notch from last month's 68% while iOS7 surrenders 4% of its share and is at 25% this month. iOS6 and earlier versions retain their marginal 3% of market share. Even so, the iOS8 rate of adoption falls behind the iOS7 from a year ago, which commanded an 80% percent adoption in the same period.
The latest 8.1.3 update featured stability improvements and the perceived maturity iOS8 has reached after initial issues has provided enough incentive for users to upgrade.
Either way, the number of devices, booting the latest version of iOS is massive, compared to its Android counterpart. As we reported, Lollipop only just made it to the distribution chart, with the huge variety of devices by numerous manufacturers being the culprit.

Apple to transform Arizona-based sapphire glass plant into a data center

Remember Apple’s former partner GT Advanced and its sapphire glass plant that went bust last year? Apparently, the Cupertino giant has plans to turn it into a massive data center.
The facility will serve as a command center for Apple’s “global networks.” The company will invest $2 billion in the project. As a result, it will create 150 full-time Apple jobs and an additional 300 to 500 supporting jobs locally.
GT Advanced has rights to use the Mesa, Arizona plant until the end of this year. As part of its commitment, the Cupertino giant will also finance solar projects in the area.

Apple iOS 8.2 beta 5 goes out to developers

Apple iOS 8.2 beta 5 is now seeding to registered developers. The 258MB large update is available over-the-air or through the iOS Dev Center.
The latest iOS developer build brings bug fixes and improvements. Version 8.2 is going to be a major release when it goes live because it will bring support for Apple Watch to the platform.
Speaking of Apple Watch, the icon for the wearable’s companion iPhone app made the rounds on Twitter as did the settings screen for the device. Details on the application leaked out last month.
The Apple Watch settings screen is showcased in the device’s human interface guidelines page. See it below.

The Apple Watch settings app
Last week, Tim Cook announced that the Apple Watch will become available in April. Apple will probably release iOS 8.2 around that time as well. The Cupertino giant just outed iOS 8.1.3 last week.

Xiaomi solves the problem of the protruding camera of the iPhone 6 using a frying pan

Xiaomi is going after the iPhone 6 Plus with its Mi Note and Mi Note Pro phablets, that’s clear. The Chinese company obviously thinks its offerings are superior to Apple’s, and it’s now put out a new video meant to drive that point home.

In it, we can see Xiaomi President and co-founder Bin Lin musing about how his company has a patented new solution which ensures there are no protruding cameras on its phones’ backs.
Said solution is nothing more and nothing less than a frying pan. Lin is literally using one of those on the iPhone 6 Plus’ back, and after a few knocks what ‘magically’ results is the non-protruding camera on the Mi Note.

Xiaomi boasts that in its devices, the camera is “integrated harmoniously with the phone body”. The company pledges to “level” any obstacles that might prevent it from “developing the best products to the fullest”, using the frying pan method of course. This apparently perfects the “user experience of mobile phones”.
So if you’re ever annoyed by the fact that your iPhone’s camera is of the protruding type, you now know what to do.
