Google gets experimental reader mode in Chrome for desktop
One of the best features of Safari on desktop or mobile is the Reader mode, that extracts the basic text and the relevant images from a web page and presents it in a more readable manner, free of distractions such as advertisements and odd font choices.
Google has been working on something similar for Chrome. They already added it in Chrome for Android a while back but oddly you have to mess around in chrome:flags to enable it. Now they are bringing it to Chrome for desktop and you can use it with more fiddling around.
On desktop it’s even more work to use this feature right now, as you have to install the DOM Distiller from here, at which point you will see the ‘Distill page’ menu item in your Chrome. That will let you use the reader mode for the webpage.
Of course, this feature should come formally with a more user friendly switch in future but if you want to use it right now and for some reason don’t want to use one of the many Chrome extensions that can already do this (such as Clearly) then give this method a try.
WhatsApp web client now also compatible with Firefox and Opera
When WhatsApp launched a desktop version of its messaging service last month, it worked only with Google Chrome. But that’s not the case anymore, as the company has announced that the client is now also compatible with Firefox and Opera.
The sign up process remains the same, which means Firefox and Opera users will also have to scan a QR code from within WhatsApp on their handset, something which can be done through a new Menu option, labeled WhatsApp Web.
A point worth mentioning is that the aforementioned option is going to be available to you if you use the app on Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, or Nokia’s old S60 OS, which means that iOS users are currently out of luck.
Chrome 40, major upgrade for Android Users
Just a day after updating Chrome for iOS, Google has announced the release of Chrome 40 for Android, bringing in an updated page info and content settings UI, as well as several bug fixes and performance improvements and few other useful changes as following:
- New bookmarks manager available in flags
- Larger address bar with overflow button, if you have Lollipop and merged tabs and recent apps
- New zoom behavior for sites with fixed headers
- More things work when you're offline
- Close all tabs shortcut added for tablets
- New view/copy URL behavior.

You can grab the updated browser app from the Play Store – the update is rolling out slowly so it may take time to hit your device and in case you don't want to wait for the update to be pushed by google into your device, you can download it from here.
