Google might be in talk with Huawei for a 2015 Nexus phone

According to the latest set of rumors, Google may be partnering with a Chinese phone maker for the next generation Nexus smartphone. The Weibo source cited by GizChina from where the information originates shares that the phone will be ready later in 2015.

A mockup of a Huawei-made Nexus
Additionally, there would be two different Nexus devices this year - one from LG and one from a Chinese maker. The last Nexus smartphone LG did was the Nexus 5 over a year ago. More interestingly, this will be the first time for Google to go with a Chinese phone maker, provided the rumor is true.
The source of the information hints that the Chinese company in question is yet to decide whether to use its own chipset or a Qualcomm-made one. Clearly, this leaves Huawei to be the company in question.

The mockups are based on the Huawei Honor 6
SlashGear has received a bunch of mocked up photos of the Huawei Honor 6 Plus rocking Nexus branding. Sadly, they're not the real deal, but give us a glimpse of how a Huawei-made Nexus device could look like.
If true, Google is on track to release two Nexus smartphones this year - one more affordable made by Huawei and a high-end one done by LG. We'll keep our ears to the ground additional rumors on the matter.

Huawei Honor Holly gets priced in the UK, launches on March 6

After India, the Huawei Honor Holly is now ready to become available for sale in the UK too. It will be in stock at Amazon starting on March 6, and it's been priced at just £74.99.
The story behind that price is rather interesting, though. Huawei had a starting price of £109.99 in mind, but told people that it would lower that if they shared information about the handset on social media. The more shares, the lower the price. This campaign has now ended with the aforementioned level reached.

That's quite an innovative way of getting prospective customers involved in the pricing of a device, yet it has to be said that Huawei would have sold a much lower number of Honor Holly units had it stuck with its initial price level.
The phone comes with a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, an 8MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2MP secondary unit, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable built-in storage, and a 2,000 mAh battery. It's powered by the MediaTek MT6582 chipset, which sports a 1.3 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and a Mali-400MP2 GPU.
The Honor Holly runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Huawei's Emotion UI 2.3 on top. The main missing bit here is 4G LTE support, though dual-SIM functionality is baked in.

New leaked cover might reveal more Huawei P8 features

Case manufacturers have long been an abundant source of leaks for expected devices and lately this seems to be truer than ever. Most of what we know about the physical appearance of the Galaxy S6and the HTC One (M9), currently the two most highly-anticipated devices has come from various case manufacturers, who are among the first in the industry with charts and dimensions for upcoming models.
In much the same fashion a new case leak allegedly holds new information about Huawei's next flagship device. Rumors state that the thin translucent case from the photos is designed to fit the Huawei P8.
If this is true then the small hunk of plastic reveals quite a bit about the future device. First of all the P8 should be impressively thin. On the right side of the case we find holes for what are undoubtedly the volume rockers and tight underneath that - the power button, so nothing extraordinary here.
What is truly interesting is the back side of the transparent bumper. It has two very distinct holes. One small in the far upper-left corner and one significantly bigger right in the center. Now this could be indicative of a lot of things and could very well mean nothing, but usually such a large space is left uncovered to accommodate something and not simply as a design element. One possible variant might be that the Huawei P8 will come with a dual-camera setup. Another option is a biometric sensor, perhaps a fingerprint scanner and heart-rate monitor.

As far as we know from previous leaks the P8 will be powered by Huawei’s latest Kirin 930 chipset, which is the first to be made using a 16nm process. It will sport a 5.2″ Full HD screen as well as dual cameras from the Honor 6 Plus (the device might even get an upgrade to dual-13MP main cameras), and will pack a 2,600mAh battery. It will come with double sided gorilla glass 3 protection and a ceramic uni-body design. At 6mm, it is said to be thinner than the iPhone 6, which is 6.9mm thick.

According to that very same rumor the device should be priced at RMB2,999($480) and be unveiled at a special event in London on April 15. The leaked specs did mention a fingerprint sensor, but it is not really visible in the accompanying image, especially where the case has left a whole to accommodate it.
There are, of course, countless possible reasons for the discrepancy, but until Huawei clears the smoke on the flagship on March 1, take it all with a bit of salt.

Huawei Ascend P8 prototype gets caught in live photos

Alleged live photos of a Huawei Ascend P8 prototype made the rounds online. The previously leaked, upcoming smartphone is wearing a case to conceal its sleek body.
In addition to the live images, a trio of AnTuTu screenshots captured from the device seemingly confirm its specs. They include Huawei’s own Kirin 930 64-bit chipset with oct-core CPU, 3GB of RAM, 13MP main camera, 8MP front-facing snapper, and Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Another purported screenshot from the device shows an AnTuTu score of 47,426. The latter puts the performance of Huawei Ascend P8 in the same ballpark as today’s crop of high-end smartphones.
Huawei Ascend P8 is expected to debut in April. Its rumored price tag is roughly $480.

Huawei puts Ascend Y540 on sale, forgets to announce it

A new budget-minded Huawei handset has been made available without an official announcement. The Ascend Y540 comes with entry-level hardware and retails in Europe for around €100-€110.
For that amount of money you get a Snapdragon 200 chipset with 1.3GHz dual-core processor, one-upping the 1.2GHz clock rate of the Ascend Y530. More significantly, RAM has been doubled to 1GB for improved performance.

Targeting budget-conscious buyers, the new generation features dual SIM slots with dual standby support. To address the increased power draw, battery capacity has reached 1950mAh. Android KitKat is on board, and that wraps up the list of changes.
A 4.5-inch screen of 480x854 pixel resolution is carried over from the predecessor, and so is the 5MP/0.3MP imaging combo. Built-in storage is tiny at 4GB, but thankfully a microSD slot provides expansion up to 32GB. Connectivity is covered by the uninspiring quad-band GSM support and dual-band 3G package.

Samsung slips to number five in Chinese smartphone market

Samsung, which was dethroned in China by local upstart Xiaomi last year, has slipped to the fifth position in the country's smartphone market now, according to a latest report from the market research firm IDC.
As per the report, in Q4, 2014, the South Korean company captured just 7.9% of the market, a whopping 50% decline compared to the year ago quarter.
On the other hand, with an year-on-year growth of 150%, Xiaomi occupied the first place, capturing 13.7% of the market. Next came in Apple, with 12.3% market share, followed by Huawei and Lenovo, with 11% and 9.5% market share, respectively.
Overall, a total of 107.5 million smartphones were shipped in the country in Q4 last year, representing a 2% quarter-on-quarter growth.

Huawei’s latest MWC teaser hints at an LTE smartwatch

Huawei’s released a couple of teasers for an upcoming MWC announcement. The cryptic images appeared on the tech giant’s official Weibo profile, with each carrying the punchline “Next is here.”
The teaser appears to hint at an upcoming smartwatch with 4G LTE connectivity, which will rivalSamsung Gear S. Huawei invites the readers to guess what the device could be by looking at the shape of the lines in the image. The latter appears to show the side and part of the strap/band of a timepiece.
A smartwatch launch by Huawei should hardly catch anyone by surprise. The company’s 2015 plans revealed an Android Wear device in the works last month.

The Huawei C199S has a 13MP main camera that shoots 1080p video, while the 5MP selfie camera can record 720p. Besides the LTE, there's 3G and 2G (with CDMA and EVDO), Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and posisitoning from A-GPS/GLONASS/Beidou.
The aluminum unibody of the 5.5" phablet measures 7.6mm thick and weighs 167g. Inside is a 3,000mAh battery.
The phablet is available for CNY 2,300, which is the equivalent of $370/€325. The C199S is available on China's Vmall right now, but it's not clear if it will get a worldwide launch or not.

Huawei P8’s specs, price, and launch date leaks served on the table

Just a couple of days after there were reports that the Huawei P8 will be announced at a special event in April, the device’s specs, price, and launch date have been revealed on Weibo.
As per the leaked information, the Ascend P7 successor will be powered by Huawei’s latest Kirin 930 chipset, which is the first to be made using 16nm process technology. It will sport a 5.2″ Full HD screen as well as dual cameras from the Honor 6 Plus (the device might even get an upgrade to dual-13MP main cameras), and will pack a 2600mAH battery.
Further, the leak also suggests that the P8 will come with double sided gorilla glass 3 protection and a ceramic uni-body design. At 6mm, it is said to be thinner than the iPhone 6, which is 6.9mm thick.
The device will be priced at RMB2,999($480), and will be unveiled on April 15 in London. It was earlier rumored to be released at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) scheduled for early next month.

Huawei doughts if the 4K juice is worth the squeeze on smartphones over battery drain risk

Chinese manufacturer Huawei has made it clear that it won’t be using 4K displays in its smartphones in the near future. According to the company’s President of the Handset Product Line Kevin Ho, the advanced displays would result in a major compromises to battery life, something which the company isn’t willing to accept.
“4K needs a lot of power, so if you use it you have to make compromises. A 4K display on a smartphone may give you half a day of battery life but a 2K display can give you maybe one day or more,” Ho said. “4K has four times t9he pixels of Full HD so the power consumption is maybe 4 or 8 times as much as Full HD so the smartphone has to have compromises with battery life.”
Ho also asserted that while 4K looks impressive on large screens, it’s difficult to tell the difference between 4K and 2K on a smaller smartphone display of five to six inches.
However, he didn’t completely rule out the possibility of 4K devices in the future. “I don’t want to say there’s no chance for 4K on smartphones, but we need to think about compromise and whether our eyes can tell the difference.”

Huawei P8 could announced in mid-April and show up at the MWC

Huawei has a flagship in the works and a MWC event scheduled for March 1. New info suggests that the Huawei P8 will not be at that event though, instead it will be revealed on April 15 at a separate event in London. The company is mum on hardware details and only says that the phone will be an "absolution beauty."
Huawei made it clear that it will focus on delivering premium devices in the mid and high-end markets. The Huawei P8 (no more Ascend) is poised to be at the top of that food chain with a slender metal chassis.

It will reportedly have a "porcelain texture", a 5.2" 1080p display (Huawei's CEO says QHD just wastes battery) and a 13MP optically stabilized camera. The flagship is set to be powered by the in-house Kirin 930 chipset, which packs an octa-core 64-bit processor and will be built on a 16nm process courtesy of TSMC.
So, what will we see at the MWC? Huawei has plans for tablets (reportedly the M-Series will be introduced) and wearables. There's also room for mid-rangers in the Honor and G series and a fresh rumor (with live photos) of a Huawei Mate 7 Compact.

Huawei outlines 2015 plans, focuses on premium devices

Huawei held a presentation at its Shenzhen headquartes revealing its plans for the imminent future. "Premium" is the buzzword, and understandably so, as the recently published financial resultsindicate that mid- to high-end devices were key in the company's last-year growth.
At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in March, Huawei is set to focus on Android wearables. The venue is selected to mark the company's foray into the smartwatch world. Lessons were learned during the yet brief existence of the niche, and consumers tend to favor a more conventional round shape. Such is Huawei's concept as well, as a prototype black body with a round face is pictured in the presentation. How close that image is to the actual device remains to be seen.
A smartband in a rainbow of fresh colors will also be unveiled, for the tech-savvy outdoor crowd. A dedicated Huawei app is in the works for easy monitoring of the feed of info coming from your wrists.
While no official info was revealed on the upcoming Huawei P8 flagship, the smartphone lineup is to remain unaltered. The Mate and P-series occupy the top with the Honor and G series spanning the midrange. The tablet lineup, on the other hand, will be expanded with the introduction of the M-series of devices, apparently in the larger tablet segment. Targeted at mobile multimedia gobblers, the series will offer "Outstanding Audio/Visual Experience", in Huawei's phrasing.
All in all, ambitious promises from the Chinese company. We're looking forward to the MWC to see whether they will start delivering.

Huawei Mate 7 Compact allegedly shown in live images

A couple of days ago we told you that Huawei might announce a new smartphone at MWC this March, namely the Mate 7 Compact. As its name clearly implies, this is going to be a smaller version of the already launched Mate 7 phablet.
The Mate 7 Compact is rumored to get a 5.5-inch display, half an inch smaller than the 6" panel on the 'full size' Mate 7. And today it's allegedly been seen in the first live images, which you can feast your eyes upon below (click the thumbnails for the full pictures).

Huawei Mate 7 Compact
This leak unfortunately doesn't bring us any additional details about the Mate 7 Compact, just those two photos. Since we have no way of verifying that they are in fact real, don't forget your grain of salt for this one.
For now the screen size is all we have to go on in terms of specs. That said, seeing a HiSilicon SoC inside the Mate 7 Compact would not be surprising at all, given Huawei's general preference for using its own chipsets in its smartphones.

Huawei sees as Samsung real competitor , not Xiaomi

Huawei may well be behind Xiaomi in local as well as international rankings, but that doesn’t mean it considers the latter as its competitor, or so claimed the company’s CEO Richard Yu, who said that Huawei instead sees Samsung as its real rival.
Yu also said that Xiaomi, which has apparently reached the number two position in China now, stands no chance in the high-end segment of the market, while adding that the startup’s Mi Note as well as Mi 4 devices offer no advantages over Huawei’s Ascend Mate 7 and Honor 6 Plus, respectively.
The news comes just a few days after Yu slammed Xiaomi’s recently unveiled Mi Note Pro for having poor battery life.

Huawei P8 leaks in live photos, specs

The successor to the Huawei Ascend P7, the company's last flagship to bear the Ascend name, has popped up in some live images. What will likely be the Huawei P8 is revealed to the public, front and back.

Huawei P8 live images

It follows the design language of the predecessor with sharp edges and slightly rounded corners. Side bezels have been kept to a minimum, the top one is also quite compact. The camera/flash arrangement on the back differs a bit from the cutouts shown in a previous leak, but perhaps that was an early design that was abandoned later on.
Hardware specs have been revealed by the same source, and they are very much in line with what we already know. The device will reportedly come with a 5.2-inch display of 1080p resolution, in-house Kirin 930 64-bit chipset and 3GB of RAM. On-board storage wasn't specified, though.
The source reports that the main camera will be a 13MP unit with optical stabilization, which is the next must-have feature in phone cameras. Battery capacity will be 2,600mAh, and that might raise some eyebrows. Given, however, the stance of Huawei CEO on QHD displays and battery efficiency, the P8 may be appropriately equipped. The device will boot the latest Android Lollipop upon launch.
Official announcement is expected to take place at a dedicated event some time in Q2 2015.

Huawei annual report sees 75M smartphones sold in 2014

Huawei Consumer Business Group, the Chinese conglomerate's consumer device division, reports a marked increase in revenue for the 2014 financial year. For the first time in company history, the $10B mark has been crossed, and by a sizable margin.
The division reports that a total of 138 million devices have been shipped in 2014, a 7.8% increase year-on-year. 75 million of those were smartphones, which marks a 45% growth on that front.
The basis for Huawei's success lies in its decision to focus on mid- to high-end devices back in 2012. Gathering momentum from then on, the company sold 4 million Ascend P7 flagship smartphones over a six month period after its launch in June 2014. Another 2 million Ascend Mate7 phablets sold since September contributed to the solid figures.
Brand awareness is also on the rise, with 65% of survey participants in 32 countries recognizing the brand in 2014, up from 52% the previous year. An extensive network of 630 Huawei shops, opened by the end of 2014, has been a powerful factor for the company's progress, as well.

Huawei CEO not happy with Xiaomi 's flagship Mi note pro

Huawei CEO Richard Yu recently shared his thoughts on Xiaomi’s latest flagship handset – the Mi Note Pro. It appears that he was less than pleased with the phablet’s battery life after being able to experience it firsthand.
The Xiaomi Mi Note Pro is equipped with a 6-inch QHD display and has a 3,000mAh battery. This is precisely where Richard’s grudge with the device lies. According to a recent post he made on Weibo, the CEO considers that the resolution is overkill for a screen of this size and the human eye has difficulties distinguishing between Full HD and QHD at this scale. He continue to criticize Xiaomi’s hardware of choice by stating that the power-hungry, high-resolution display only diminishes battery life.
He further backs up these observations by stating that he had the chance to use both the Meizu MX4 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and was disappointed with the battery life of both devices. While this might theoretically be true and a QHD resolution may still be more of a curse than a blessing on smartphones, the important thing to take away is a hint at possible Huawei future plans.
The sibling rivalry between the two Chinese companies isn’t surprising anyone, but Richard Yu’s disappointment with QHD resolution mobile displays might just hint that Huawei still intend to stick with Full HD in future devices. Then again, it might just be haggling. What is your take on the matter and would you people like to see QHD resolution form Xiaomi in the future?

Huawei MWC event on March 1

The increasingly popular Chinese tech manufacturer Huawei has fixed a date for its MWC event and has even started sending out invitations. The conference is set for March 1 at 3 PM local time (4PM GMT) with a promise of new "surprises that will empower you to set your dreams free".

We are definitely excited to see what Huawei has in store, especially considering all the attention it has been receiving in the rumor mill. First of all, as most of you have surely heard, the ever-growing popularity and increasing brand awareness Huawei will most probably act on its plans to ditch the Ascend sub-brand and start putting out the next device lineup without using the moniker.
This is a huge step and is definitely linked to the company's impressive 33% revenue rise during 2014. So the Ascend Mate7 might just be the last flagship to bear the particular branding.
Speaking of flagships, Huawei should have a couple in the works that is if rumors are true. First up we have been hearing a lot about the Huawei P8. Last month we covered a few interesting photos of what was said to be the metal chassis for the device and even before that we got a hint at possible specs. The smartphone should pack a 5.2-inch Full HD display with a 2.5D curved glass and run on the HiSilicon Kirin 930 chipset built on TSMC's 16nm process and packing an octa-core processor within.
Next up we are hoping that the MWC event will clear the smoke around the successor of the Ascend Mate 7, the Mate 8. Not much is known about the alleged device, but a few questionable photos have been resurfacing. In any case the prospect of a new addition to the phablet family is very exciting as well.
So be sure to check back on March 1 for our coverage on the Huawei event and all the exciting announcements that may be in store.
