LG G3 for Verizon gets Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

LG G3 for Verizon Wireless is the latest version of the Korean company’s flagship smartphone to receive Android 5.0.1 Lollipop. The new OS build has the software version number VS98523A.
Verizon is the third major carrier to begin seeding Android 5.0 to LG G3 users. Sprint Wireless andAT&T released the update to their variants of the smartphone already.
Android Lollipop brings a host of improvements to the LG G3. They include new UI design language, new security features, as well as a brand new Android ART runtime. You can find out more details about the changes in the device’s performance and battery life in our blog posts.

Sprint LG G3 in US now getting Lollipop OTA

News has come today that Sprint has started seeding Android 5.0 to its own LG G3 units. This is definitely good news for eager US users, as Lollipop has been around for the handset in Europe since December last year.

This new update comes only days after AT&T updated their own units. The package is already being seeded and according to Sprint will bring the following benefits to the handset:
  • Material Design for fluid animation, multicolored themes and 3D views
  • More efficient battery use
  • Android™ TV support
  • Notifications on the lock screen and customizable options with prioritized notifications for events, reminders, messages and calls
  • Updated Lock Screen features allow users to quickly access notifications and active apps
  • Enhanced low vision and color blind capabilities for added Accessibility
  • Integrated location menu enables users to easily activate GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks, while simultaneously checking the battery usage of apps running location service capabilities
  • Enhanced Messaging with Google Hangouts™ support for SMS and MMS and a larger assortment of updated Emoji icons
  • Upgraded Google Mobile Service™ apps automatically back up photos and video and can open, view, rename and share Google Docs and files
We have already had a chance to play around with Lollipop on the G3 and found that like many other smartphones the LG also behaves quite differently in performance benchmarks. If you are interested in what potential gains the OTA can bring you, take a quick look at our extensive post on the matter, as well as our equally thorough investigation of battery life with the new version.
For anyone on Sprint still not getting the update notification, check for it through the settings menu.

AT&T's LG G3 is receiving the Android Lollipop update too

AT&T has started rolling out the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop for the LG G3 units that it's sold. This follows the rollout of the new software for G3 models from other parts of the world, which started last year.
If you have an AT&T G3, it should soon notify you that an update is available to download and install, if it hasn't done so already.
The file you need to grab comes in at around 690MB, and after performing the five-minute installation procedure your phone will be running Android 5.0.1, software version D85020f, build number LRX21Y.
If you haven't received the update notification yet, you can always manually make the smartphone check for it by using the relevant part of the Settings menu.

LG G3 buyers will get a free VR headset based on Google’s Cardboard project

LG has teamed up with Google to offer future buyers of the G3 a free VR headset. This is based on Google’s Cardboard contraption unveiled last year at the search giant’s developer conference. However, LG has tweaked things a bit.

First off, this iteration seems to be made out of plastic, and not actual cardboard. Next up, it features cutouts for the G3′s rear-facing power and volume buttons, as well as its 1W speaker.
Otherwise, it looks pretty much like a plastic version of Google Cardboard. And like that, it has no batteries and no processing power of its own, relying solely on the phone’s visuals and innards. The VR for G3 has a neodymium ring magnet on its side, which works with the magnetic gyroscope inside the smartphone to select apps and scroll through menus without ever touching the screen. And all you need to do to use the VR for G3 is put the handset in.
Unfortunately LG has not yet detailed which markets will get the offer, but the company assures us that it will start happening this month, so hopefully more information is coming soon. We do know that LG will throw in a free VR game too, called Robobliteration.

LG G3 receives a newer version of Lollipop update in Europe

The LG G3 is already rocking Android 5.0 Lollipop, as its initial update has spread across Europe since December.
Now though, the Korean smartphone maker is in the process of pushing an additional firmware upgrade for the G3, at least it's doing so in Italy. So presumably other European countries will follow.

This is still Lollipop, mind you, but it's a smaller update that's primarily meant to polish things around, making the experience better than before.
The update comes in at around 90 MB. After applying it, you'll be running software version V20h, whereas the initial Lollipop update took that to V20e.
The new version brings with it unnamed bug fixes and improvements, along with some new icons for the software-rendered Android keys, as well as smoother animations all-round.
